Breast Implant Revision

Breast Implant Revision

Breast enhancement, or augmentation, is one of the most common cosmetic surgeries worldwide. While breast implants have been modified over the years to be safer and last longer, they still need to be exchanged over time for safety reasons. They can also be exchanged for aesthetic reasons if the current implants are uncomfortable or not what you expected.

Located in Celebration, the Institute of Aesthetic Surgery serves surrounding areas in Orlando, Florida. Contact us today to schedule a consultation and find out if you are due for a breast implant exchange.

What is a Breast Implant Revision?

On average, breast implants should be exchanged every 10-15 years, but there are many reasons why women seek a breast implant exchange. Pregnancy or breastfeeding after the implants were placed may require a revision, as well as significant weight changes, a malfunction of the implant itself, or a buildup of scar tissue around the implant. In some cases, women simply get used to the size and would like larger implants.

In most cases of breast implant exchange surgery, Dr. Sylora will try to follow the incision patterns of your previous surgery in order to eliminate putting new scars into the area. How the procedure proceeds is completely dependant on the size and placement of the new implants, and a pocket will be created accordingly within the breast tissue.

Breast implant exchange is performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia, and your incisions will be sutured and bandaged.

Am I a Good Candidate for Breast Implant Revision?

If it has been more than a decade since your implants were placed, you may want to consider breast implant exchange surgery. Women who are in good health, do not smoke or are willing to quit, have no medical conditions or take no medications that could impair surgery are typically approved for this procedure. Doctor Sylora will help you determine if this procedure is right for you during your consultation.

What is Recovery Like?

The healing process for breast implant exchange surgery will be similar to when the implants were first put in. Mild, temporary bruising and swelling may be experienced after surgery, and any residual discomfort can be easily controlled with medication. A support bra should be worn while the breasts heal, and strenuous activity should be avoided for the first few weeks.

Many women report that after the primary augmentation surgery, the recovery from breast implant exchange surgery is easier as your body is already accustomed to having implants.

How Long Will the Results Last?

Unless there are complications with the implants themselves, your new implants should last until they are replaced again.
