Common Reasons to Undergo Aesthetic Surgery

There are many different things that motivate patients to undergo aesthetic surgery.  During your first consultation at The Institute of Aesthetic Surgery, we will ask you what cosmetic enhancement(s) you’re interested in and what your expectations are.  We do this to assess your candidacy for surgery and to be sure your expectations are reasonable compared to what can be achieved.

Before your appointment, consider why you want to have enhancements or corrections to your body. Once you have done that, think about some of the following reasons people commonly choose aesthetic surgery and how, or if, you can benefit from the procedure you desire.

1) Genetics

No one is perfect.  Everyone is born with features they are displeased with.  For example, sometimes the breasts are not proportional to your frame.  Changing your body to be more symmetrical or contouring a feature can positively benefit your self-confidence.

2) Aging

As we age, things about our bodies and skin change.  Opting for a procedure like a facelift can remove years of aging from your face.  Choosing to preserve a healthy aesthetic can be a wise decision as long as you understand the benefits and limitations that anti-aging treatments can afford.

3) Correction

Often, trauma or the natural condition of a body part is limiting to a person’s quality of life.  For example, eyelid surgery is useful for enhancing peripheral vision, or nasal surgery can both improve the aesthetics and functionality of the nose.  Even body contouring or excess skin removal can be beneficial for those who have lost significant weight.

4) Self-Confidence

In your career, social settings, or even when you are getting a fresh start, improving or enhancing your face or body can give you a boost of self-confidence.   When you feel more confident, it is reflected in the way you carry yourself, and it is palatable to others.  That positivity can translate into career advancement and social situations because you are bringing your best to the table.

Choosing Aesthetic Surgery

What you should shy away from is seeking aesthetic surgery as a way to please someone else, solve depression, or simply because you are bored and are seeking change.  Your motivation will greatly affect how you feel about your result and whether you are a good candidate.
