As the new year begins, it is common to both figuratively and literally look in the mirror to take stock of what we can improve. Shorter, cooler winter days mean less sun exposure, and the dawning of a new decade reminds us that we are getting older.
It’s been said that gym membership goes up for the first six weeks of the new year following which it dwindles again. A new skin care program can also give us a look of rejuvenation and youth, but it may be easier to commit to.
An important first step in any good skin care program is a topical treatment such as tretinoin (Retin-A). A form of vitamin A, tretinoin helps the skin renew itself to treat acne, reduce the appearance of fine lines and discoloration, and improve skin texture. Considered to be the most widely prescribed retinoid, tretinoin can be used on most skin types including teens and those with mature skin.
For those benefiting from youth, a good skin care regimen including a topical treatment, a quality moisturizer, and cleanser may be enough. For those who have seen a few more decades, greater rejuvenation can be achieved through non-invasive or minimally invasive procedures such as laser treatment or microneedling with radio-frequency stimulation. These procedures will thicken the skin generating additional collagen, reducing pigmentation issues, and tightening the skin. Requiring little to no downtime, these procedures can achieve what good skin care alone cannot.
Ultimately, some patients will need surgical lifting or other procedures to achieve their goals. When needed, I generally advise doing as much as possible in one trip in order to minimize anesthesia needs and recovery time. However, starting with a simple straight-forward approach, rooted in good daily skin care, and adding procedures as necessary can start you on the path to beautiful skin year-round.
When developing a plan to achieve your skin rejuvenation goals, it’s important to consult with a professional such as a plastic surgeon or dermatologist. Similar to working with a trainer at a gym, you are more likely to commit and achieve your goals if you have somebody to guide you towards success.
