Five Tips to Help Speed up Your Recovery after Otoplasty

Otoplasty

If you’re not satisfied with the way your ears look, you don’t have to worry. At the Institute of Aesthetic Surgery, we offer otoplasty, a procedure that changes the shape, size, and position of your ears. Unlike other cosmetic procedures, recovering from otoplasty is relatively stress-free. However, there are still some few things you need to do to speed up your recovery process and reduce the risk of developing complications. We’ve outlined these things below.

1. Avoid Rubbing Your Ears

You’ll need to be careful not to rub or touch your ears after your surgery. This will prevent infections, protect the incisions and ensure your ears retain their new shape. Also, make sure you sleep on your back to keep the pressure away from your ears.

2. Avoid Smoking

Another way to speed up your recovery after otoplasty is to avoid smoking two weeks before and after your surgery. Nicotine from cigarette leads to delayed recovery, poor healing or irregular scarring. If you’re not a smoker, it’s advisable to avoid being around those who smoke.

3. Eat a Well-Balanced, Healthy Diet

Eating a balanced diet during your recovery period is important. A balanced diet gives your body all the necessary nutrients it needs to accelerate healing. Some of the protein foods that can help you heal quickly include soy, poultry, fish, beans, dairy, eggs, meat, nuts, and cheese. Besides protein foods, you can also try other foods such as berries, vegetables, and foods that contain fats.

4. Avoid Sun Exposure

Avoiding sun exposure or prolonged exposure to heat for about three weeks after surgery can also help speed up your recovery process. You can minimize sun exposure by covering your head with light clothing or through wearing a hat. Our doctor may also recommend sunscreen to apply to the ears to reduce sun penetration.

5. Keep Your Head Elevated

It’s normal if you experience mild swelling after your surgery. The good news is that you can minimize swelling by keeping your head elevated by two pillows for a couple of weeks after your surgery. You should also avoid heavy lifting, bending or straining during the first few weeks after your surgery.
