Helpful Things to Know About Liposuction

Liposuction

For many men and women, it doesn’t matter how clean you eat or how much you work out. You’re going to look in the mirror and see stubborn pockets of fat which are resistant to diet and exercise. At The Institute of Aesthetic Surgery, we’d like you to know that there’s hope. Unfortunately, you can’t “spot reduce” fat through diet and exercise. But there is a safe, effective procedure that can remove fat from your body for good. It’s called liposuction.

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes fat from your body. It is also known as lipoplasty or suction-assisted lipectomy. The most important thing to understand about this procedure is it’s not weight loss surgery. You may lose some weight when the fat is removed from your body. But the goal of this procedure is to contour your body, reshaping and redefining it to achieve your aesthetic goals.

Types of Liposuction

Another important thing to know about this procedure is there are different techniques, including tumescent and ultrasound.

Tumescent Lipo

Tumescent lipo is the most widely practiced technique. It involves injecting a sterile solution into the treatment area. This solution contains saltwater, epinephrine and lidocaine. The lidocaine ensures no real discomfort is felt during the procedure while the epinephrine and saline makes it far easier to remove the fat.

Ultrasound-Assisted Lipo

Ultrasound-assisted lipo, also called UAL, uses energy to liquify your fat cells. In the case of UAL, energy from sound waves ruptures your fat’s cell walls beneath your skin. This liquefies the fat, making it easier to remove.

Am I a Good Candidate?

The best candidate for liposuction has realistic expectations about the results, is in good general health and doesn’t smoke. You should also be at or very close to your ideal body weight, be committed to a healthy lifestyle in the future and have elastic, firm skin. During your initial consultation, we will advise you on whether or not you qualify for the procedure.
