What are Vascular Lesions?

Benign vascular lesions are caused by the overgrowth of enlarged blood vessels or by several small blood vessels. While some types of vascular lesions can go away on their own, others grow with the patient and become darker.

While vascular lesions do not indicate a medical problem most of the time, they can cause self-consciousness and avoidance behaviors if left untreated. Treatment with an intense pulsed light (IPL) laser can reduce or eliminate lesions and restore healthy, revitalized skin.

How can Laser Treatment Help Vascular Lesions?

IPL laser treatment is one of the safest and most effective ways to treat vascular lesions. When delivered directly to the skin, the laser technology has the ability to target the specific blood vessels of the lesion without irritating or damaging the surrounding healthy skin.

The thermal heat of the laser light damages the vessels that make up the lesion, cutting off its blood supply and stimulating the healing process. The duration of the treatment and amount of pulses that are used depend on the size of the lesion and the areas being treated.

What Types of Lesions Can Be Treated?

Several types of child and adult lesions can be treated with IPL laser therapy, including:

Lesions that involve single blood vessels, such as spider veins, are easily treated with just a few pulses of the laser, but more expansive lesions such as port wine stain birthmarks, may require more extensive treatment.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Unlike other treatments, IPL laser therapy will not scar or cause uneven texture of the skin. Immediately after treatment, the skin around treated areas may be temporarily discolored. This is normal, and it will subside as the skin heals. Recovery of treated areas depends on the lesion and size of the area, but applying ice packs afterward help control any residual discomfort.

After treatment, you may be advised to avoid abrasive skin cleansers and scrubbing treated areas to avoid further irritating the skin.
