Otoplasty | Frequently Asked Questions

otoplasty

Cosmetic ear surgery – also known as otoplasty – can make a huge difference in the life of an adult or child embarrassed about the size or shape of their ears. Are you considering this procedure for you or your child? If so, you probably have a lot of questions and some concerns. The Institute of Aesthetic Surgery has assembled a list of the most commonly asked questions about the procedure with brief answers to help you along.

What Is Otoplasty?

Also known as ear surgery, otoplasty is a cosmetic surgery procedure that can improve the appearance of a patient’s ears. It can successfully decrease the size of large ears, move protruding ears closer to the head, and reshape irregular-looking ears to make them appear more normal.

Who Is A Good Candidate For The Procedure?

Healthy individuals who want to improve the appearance of large, protruding ears or ears that are misshapen may be good candidates for otoplasty. The surgery can be performed on adults and children as early as age four, at the discretion of our surgeon and the child’s parents. Having the procedure done early can help to reduce the psychological and emotional discomfort that children may experience without the procedure.

What Is Involved With The Procedure?

Different techniques are used for otoplasty, depending on the particular issue. Incisions are typically made in the back of the ear so that they aren’t easily visible. The cartilage may be reshaped, and the ear bent back closer to the head. In some cases, non-removable stitches are used to hold the new shape in place.

How Long Does The Procedure Take?

The surgery usually takes one to two hours to perform, though it may be shorter or longer depending on the situation.

What Can I Expect During My Recovery Following Otoplasty Surgery?

Patients can typically expect a recovery time of about one week following the surgery. If the patient experiences any throbbing or aching of the ears, medication can help manage such discomfort.

When Can I Return To Work Following My Surgery?

Patients can usually return to school or work in about five to seven days.

How Soon Will I Be Able To Exercise Following My Otoplasty Surgery?

Vigorous activities and involvement with contact sports will most likely need to be postponed for approximately one to two months.

Is The Procedure Covered By Insurance?

In some cases, this surgery is covered by insurance. Patients should consult with their own insurance company to discuss benefits and limitations before scheduling the procedure.
