Treating Spider and Varicose Veins with Sclerotherapy

sclerotherapy

If you have bulging places on your legs that look like twisted cords just underneath the surface of the skin, you likely have varicose veins. They frequently develop when the blood flow that is returning to the heart begins to back up in the veins. Varicose veins are more common in the legs because the blood there must be pumped against the pull of gravity in order to return it to the heart and lungs.

To keep the blood from flowing backwards in the veins, there are valves in the vessels that act like check valves. These valves help to ensure that the blood can only flow in one direction. If they do not function as they should, gravity can make the blood start to go against the flow. This can cause the blood to pool and lead to varicose veins.

Spider veins are similar to varicose veins except for the size of the blood vessels. Spider veins are much smaller. They usually develop in the capillaries that branch out from the larger vessels. While varicose veins are seen most often in the legs, it is common for spider veins to develop in the face and chest, as well as the legs.

Spider veins usually do not present any risk to an individual’s health. Since they are visible through the skin, however, many people feel that they are unsightly and seek treatment to remove them. On the other hand, varicose veins can be accompanied by symptoms like itching and hurting.

There is good news if you have either varicose or spider veins and would like to get rid of them. A variety of treatment methods are available, one of the oldest of which is sclerotherapy. It is a tried and proven method that has been in use since the 1930s. Not only is it effective, but it is a fairly easy procedure for medical professionals to administer.

Sclerotherapy is conducted by injecting a solution into the veins that are targeted for removal. The solution causes the blood in the vessel to thicken and the lining to swell and stick together. It then turns into scar tissue that is absorbed by the body over the next several weeks. During this time, it fades from view.

Sclerotherapy treatments can be done in the comfort of our office as an outpatient procedure. Many patients drive themselves home afterward. After undergoing this treatment, you will be able to return to your normal daily activities right away. You should refrain from any aerobic exercises for the next few days, however.
