Reshape Your Nose with Nose Surgery

Nose Surgery

Rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, changes the shape of the nose. Various issues prompt patients to opt for nose surgery. The primary indications for nose surgery are to correct a medical problem, to change its aesthetic appearance or both. The medical condition can be the result of a broken nose, breathing difficulties due to a deviated septum or a congenital defect.

Aesthetic rhinoplasty occurs when patients do not like the size, shape, or overall appearance of their nose and would prefer a different look. While many of the surgical techniques for nasal reconstruction have remained the same over the years, more precise instruments, improved operating conditions and better anesthesia are available today. Rhinoplasty may be able to provide the look you desire, improve your appearance, and increase your quality of life.

What to Expect during Nose Surgery

While each operation is unique and customized for individual patients based on their goals and anatomy, there are two principal surgical techniques used during nose surgery. The first technique works from inside the nose while the second option is performed through a small external incision at the base of the nose.

Pieces of bone and cartilage will be removed or reshaped to shorten, lengthen or change the angle of your nose as well as to narrow or widen the nostrils. Prosthetic devices may be added to achieve the desired look. Depending upon the complexity of the surgery, Dr. Gregory may opt for either local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. We will discuss which option is best during a pre-operative consultation.

Recovery from Nose Surgery

After surgery, expect your nose to experience a little swelling. The procedure may also cause some bruising around the eyes that can last several days. You may be required to wear a nose splint for the first week. The final shape of your nose will only be apparent after it has completely healed. Any noticeable signs of the surgery should disappear within two to three weeks.

During your postoperative recovery, you should avoid strenuous activity for three to six weeks following surgery and take baths instead of showers. Other precautions may include not blowing your nose and avoiding extreme facial expressions. You should wear clothing that buttons in the front instead of apparel that must be pulled over your head. Our medical team will outline a plan that will assist in your postoperative recovery.
