What are Chemical Peels?

April 10, 2017 by

Chemical peels

Chemical peels are short, simple procedures for rejuvenating the skin. During these treatments, nutrient-dense, chemical solutions are applied to the surface of the skin. These topical agents simultaneously nourish and exfoliate the dermis so that dead, damaged skin cells are sloughed away and replaced by new and healthier cells. Chemical peels can significantly reduce the appearance of age spots, dark spots, fine lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores and acne scars, among many other things.

Different Options in Chemical Peels

Depending on the type and severity of the cosmetic issues being addressed, chemical peels can be light, medium or deep. Light peels only affect the outermost layers of the skin and are generally best for resolving minor skin issues. Medium and deep peels affect the dermis at deeper levels and can be used to resolve issues affecting skin texture such as pitted acne scars as well as for balancing and evening out the skin tone. These peels can help to reduce the appearance of age spots, freckles and wrinkles and produce dramatic improvements in the texture, tone and overall look of the dermis.

How to Know if a Chemical Peel is Right for You

Our provider will perform a thorough examination of your skin and your list of cosmetic concerns in order to determine whether or not chemical peels are right for you. These procedures can be used to address problems like melasma, hyperpigmentation, acne scars, crow’s feet, wrinkles, sagging skin, sun damage and more.

What Do Chemical Peels Feel Like?

These treatments are increasingly focused on nourishing and pampering the skin and often rely on gentle acids for chemical exfoliation. While these treatments may cause a slight amount of stinging along with mild redness, overall discomfort is minimal.

After treatment, it is common for you skin to peel over the course of days as the damaged skin is removed. You will want to wear sunscreen and avoid the sun as your skin heals. Once your skin has fully healed, you can enjoy your wrinkle-free, vibrant visage.
