Spider Veins | What Are the Symptoms?

July 2, 2018 by Alexandra Colvin

spider veins

Spider veins, also known as telangiectasia, are tiny red, blue, or purple blood vessels that are easily visible through the surface of the skin. While they pose no harm by themselves, they can often look unsightly and unattractive, causing people to seek corrective surgery to resolve this issue. To tackle the growing need for surgery to handle this problem, several hospitals and medical centers are including the procedure among their services. One such is The Institute of Aesthetic Surgery, which has a seasoned team of experts adept at performing sclerotherapy for telangiectasia.

One of the first steps to determining whether you need to opt for this corrective procedure is to identify whether the issue you’re suffering from is spider veins. Knowing the symptoms of the problem will help you recognize the condition.

What Are The Symptoms Of Spider Veins?

Although individual symptoms vary from case to case, some general symptoms of spider veins are listed below.

Thread-Like Patterns

This is the most commonly recognized symptom of spider veins. The problem appears as thin, thread-like patterns that are easily discernable below the surface of the skin. They may be red, blue, or purple.

Location

The veins typically appear on the legs. Sometimes, they are also found on the hands or the chest. Because most of the areas that these veins appear in are easily visible, it may appear unsightly.

Itching

Sometimes, these veins can also be itchy. An ordinary vein that’s visible due to intense stress causes no irritable itch. However, areas affected by this issue can get increasingly itchy with time.

Pain and cramping

Spider veins can also cause pain and cramping, especially in the legs. The pain generally gets worse when people suffering from this problem walk continuously for long distances or stand for long periods of time.

Swelling

Swelling is another common symptom that these veins present. Although it’s a fairly uncommon symptom in people who do not have a serious case of the problem, it can become a persistent symptom if not treated in time.

Tingling And Heaviness

Over time, the problem can also display symptoms such as a persistent tingling, especially when the affected areas remain at rest for a prolonged period. Heaviness in the limbs affected by the condition is also another common symptom.

Spider Veins Versus Varicose Veins

Spider veins are often mistaken for varicose veins, and vice versa. However, knowing the differences between these two conditions can help you correctly identify the condition. One of the primary points of difference is the size. While spider veins are smaller and more delicate, varicose veins are larger and bulge out more than the former. Another difference is that while spider veins display no serious symptoms, varicose veins are nearly always accompanied by pain, swelling, and incessant discomfort.

Conclusion

Now that you know the typical symptoms that spider veins display, you can schedule an appointment with an expert to help you handle the problem in the best manner.  The Institute of Aesthetic Surgery has some of the most experienced professionals on call, ready to help you figure out a customized solution, serving Celebration, Lake Nona, Altamonte Springs, and the surrounding areas. All you need to do is schedule an appointment and go in for a consultation.
