Common Causes of Enlarged Pores

November 21, 2016 by

enlarged pores

Whether you realize it or not, skin pores are very important for your skin’s health. The pores within your skin are responsible for keeping it hydrated and soft, but you shouldn’t be reminded that you have them every single time you take a look in the mirror.

When your skin pores become clogged, infected or dilated, they develop a prominent appearance. As a result, they grow and look much larger than normal. Although you can’t permanently shrink enlarged pores, it’s possible to make them less noticeable. It’s beneficial to first understand the common causes of overly large pores.

What are the Most Common Causes?

Genetics is a major factor that determines the size of your pores. Another common cause of enlarged pores is oily skin. Since excess oil tends to accumulate around pores, it can make them appear to be larger than they really are. As such, unclean skin is a leading cause of enlarged pores.

When dirt sits around the pores, your skin starts to thicken, and the prominence of each pore is increased. Sun damage is another common cause of enlarged pores. A lot of people try to hide skin imperfections with makeup, and ironically, the makeup can cause pores to look even larger.

The natural aging process is also partially responsible for enlarged pores. As you get older, your skin loses elasticity, and when this happens, your pores will begin to dilate, which can make them look enlarged. You can even get enlarged pores from blackheads. Once they get clogged with bacteria and dirt, oil begins to accumulate, and the diameter of each pore expands.

Treatments for Enlarged Pores

The good news is that you have treatment options available. A number of advances in skin care and cosmetic procedures have made it possible to get effective treatment for enlarged pores.

If you feel like large pores are negatively affecting your appearance, you might consider the HydraFacial®, for example. This treatment utilizes vortex suction to safely and effectively clean out the pores. No downtime is involved, making it an extremely convenient treatment.

If you’re tired of looking at enlarged pores and want to do something about it, schedule a consultation at The Institute of Aesthetic Surgery to learn more about how your condition can be treated. For your convenience, we have offices in Celebration and Altamonte Springs, both located in close proximity to Orlando. Contact us today to book your appointment!
