When to Consider Male Breast Reduction

June 13, 2016 by

male breast reduction

When most people think about breast reduction, they imagine a woman who is looking to reduce the size of her breasts to a size that she is more comfortable with. However, many people are surprised to learn that a good number of men visit our cosmetic surgeon to get male breast reduction. In most cases, this is because these men have a disease known as gynecomastia, which is another term for oversized male breasts.

The cosmetic procedure that addresses this issue involves removing the fat and glandular tissue from the patient’s breast with the goal of giving him a chest that is flat, firm and that has more of a muscular contour.

The reasons why men develop fatty breasts are not completely understood. Scientists do see a genetic link to the development of fatty breasts in men. Other men who develop fatty breasts do so as a result of using certain medications. It is estimated that more than 50 percent of men in the United States have some level of gynecomastia. There is no age limit for when a man may develop gynecomastia. Sometimes teenagers need a male breast reduction surgery, and sometimes older men develop gynecomastia and require surgery to address the issue.

Contrary to what some may believe, it is not just overweight men who need a male breast reduction. It is true that some men have seen a reduction of breast fat and tissue by losing weight. However, there are a number of very lean men who still have enlarged breasts.

Fortunately, male breast reduction surgery addresses this problem. When men have this performed, they say that they feel that their self-confidence is enhanced. Many men comment that after a breast reduction surgery, they feel like they can walk around shirtless for the first time in their life.

If you currently feel self-conscious about the appearance of your chest or if you feel that you need to stay away from certain activities that require you to go shirtless because you do not want people to make fun of your enlarged breasts, a male breast reduction may be the right option for you. Of course, it is best for you to sit down and discuss the procedure with our cosmetic surgeon. It is a serious surgery, but it is a surgery that can offer unbelievable results with minimal downtime and minimal scarring.

One technique for treating gynecomastia is liposuction. This is relatively new because in times past, liposuction techniques were not advanced enough to allow it to be used in this way. Now, there is a wide array of minimally-invasive liposuction techniques.

Dealing with enlarged breasts can rob a man of his self-confidence. However, men who have had male breast reduction surgery say that once they had the procedure, they had more confidence and were able to engage in facets of their life they were not able to engage in previously.
