Am I a Good Candidate for Sclerotherapy?

January 23, 2017 by

sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a time-tested treatment for the removal of varicose veins, reticular veins and spider veins. Used successfully since the 1930s, it is widely considered one of the best treatments for visible veins that may have caused you self-consciousness. During a consultation with our specialist, you may find out if you are a good candidate for sclerotherapy. If you have visible veins on your legs that you would like to treat, this treatment may be an effective option for you.

Many patients find that they are good candidates for this treatment. This procedure may be right for you if you have realistic expectations, follow our specialist’s instructions both before and after the treatment, and are in good general health.

If you have a history of blood clots, one of our specialists can help you determine if sclerotherapy is right for you depending on the reason for the clot and the overall health of the area being treated.

Sclerotherapy involves a small injection directly into the affected vein. Over time, this will safely remove the vein and promote blood flow through new, healthy tissue. The procedure may take several sessions to remove all affected veins, and the number of treatments needed depends on your own particular needs.

After sclerotherapy, you may be asked to walk around for a few minutes and wear compression stockings for a few weeks. This ensures proper blood flow through the healthy veins.

Since new varicose and spider veins may appear after receiving sclerotherapy, it is wise to know how to prevent them. Maintaining a healthy weight can greatly help keep pressure off the veins in your legs and reduce the risk of developing new varicose veins. If you have a job that requires you to stand or sit for long hours, it is recommended to sit with your feet elevated for about 10 minutes at a time at intervals throughout the day. If you sit all day, you should get up and walk around for about 10 minutes each hour. All of these measures can help prevent the formation of new spider and varicose veins, especially after receiving this treatment.

Sclerotherapy is a safe and effective treatment for removing varicose and spider veins. It gives you the chance to have smooth legs again. If you’re considering sclerotherapy to remove visible veins on your legs, schedule a consultation with the Institute of Aesthetic Surgery in Celebration. Our expert team can examine your vein issues and learn about your overall health to help you determine if sclerotherapy is right for you.
