Repair Sun-Damaged Skin with Laser Skin Resurfacing

January 16, 2017 by

laser skin resurfacing

Spending as much time in the sun as possible to work on your tan may have seemed like a good idea at the time if you were doing this on a regular basis through the years. As the years progress and you start to notice signs of sun-damaged skin, you may find yourself wishing you could turn back the hands of time and reevaluate your past practices. Fortunately, laser skin resurfacing can be used to reverse signs of sun damage on your skin.

Sun-damaged skin usually manifests itself in the form of dark spots that are scattered across the skin’s surface. These spots are also referred to by many as age spots. In reality, however, it is likely that the years of exposure to the sun was what caused the spots to develop.

These spots develop because of concentrated patches of melanin in the skin. Melanin is that element that provides the skin with pigment. It is also used by the body to protect the skin against the harmful UV rays of the sun. Upon being exposed to these rays, additional melanin is produced as a protective measure. As the melanin level increases, the skin gains more pigment and starts to look darker, resulting in that golden than that so many people desire.

When the process caused by the sun happens over and over, the skin will eventually end up with small patches in which there is a concentration of melanin. This causes those spots to look darker than the surrounding skin, and you end up with sunspots. If this sounds like your situation, it may be time to consider laser skin resurfacing.

Laser skin resurfacing is a method that is known to be effective at removing these dark spots. During this treatment, the laser energy is directed at the skin. The skin is removed layer by layer as a result. As new skin cells begin to grow to replace the ones that were destroyed by the laser, they will be free from the excessive melanin that caused the spots.

If you have skin that has been damaged by the sun, you should be encouraged by the fact that laser skin resurfacing treatments are available. You should consider having a conversation with our team at The Institute of Aesthetic Surgery about the feasibility of using laser skin resurfacing to improve your appearance. This is also an effective treatment for wrinkles, scars and uneven skin tone. We have offices in Altamonte Springs and Celebration. Contact us today to schedule a consultation for laser skin resurfacing.
