Sclerotherapy in Orlando: Benefits, Preparation, Procedure, and More

September 10, 2018 by Alexandra Colvin

sclerotherapy

At The Institute of Aesthetic Surgery, we offer a variety of safe and effective treatments for varicose and spider veins. One of the most common therapies our doctors recommend is the use of sclerotherapy. In this article, we have highlighted what you need to know about sclerotherapy to help you determine if it’s the right treatment for you.

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is the treatment of varicose and spider veins using a chemical solution that is injected into the affected areas. This treatment improves the appearance of the veins and reduces the burning, swelling, and itching caused by these conditions.

How Does This Treatment Work?

A chemical solution is injected directly into the spider or varicose vein. This chemical solution causes the walls of the veins to swell, stopping the circulation of blood in those areas. The lack of blood supply causes those veins to constrict within a few weeks.

How Do You Prepare for This Treatment?

You need to first consult with our dermatologic surgeon in Orlando. During your initial consultation, our doctors will look at your medical history and conduct a physical examination to determine whether you are a good candidate for sclerotherapy. The physical examination involves assessing the affected veins to find out if there is a more serious problem. If our doctors determine that you are a good candidate for this treatment, they will give you specific instructions to follow before the procedure.

How is Sclerotherapy Performed?

This treatment procedure is performed in a doctor’s office as an outpatient service. The affected areas on your legs are thoroughly cleaned and dried. After that, our doctors use a tiny needle to inject a chemical solution directly into the affected veins. The number of injections you have depends on the size and number of varicose and spider veins being treated.

This treatment takes about 15 to 30 minutes and does not require anesthesia. After the injections, massage and compression are applied to the veins to keep blood out. Multiple treatment sessions may be recommended for patients with severe cases.

Schedule Your Initial Consultation
