Nose surgery can be performed for two primary reasons. It is usually done to improve either form or function, although sometimes the same surgery can improve both. Surgery of the nose that is performed to improve form is mostly for cosmetic purposes when the patient is not satisfied with the way the nose looks and wants it changed. When done for function, nose surgery is usually done to address an abnormality or deformity that interferes with proper breathing. There are also times when it may be performed to alleviate the causes of chronic infections.
The septum is the object inside the nose that divides the nasal cavity in half just above the nostrils. A deviated septum is when it is off center or otherwise abnormally shaped. It can also be bent as a result of an injury. When this is the case, air flow can be restricted and breathing will become difficult. This condition can be corrected with nose surgery.
Nasal obstructions can occur with age as the cartilage in the nose gets weaker and allows the sides of the nose to fall inward. Nose surgery is sometimes used to correct this condition as well.
Nasal polyps are growths of soft tissue that can form on the lining inside the nose or near the sinus cavities. Because these growths have the effect of shrinking the size of the airway that takes air from the nose to the lungs, surgical removal of them could be necessary.
In a condition that is different from the growth of polyps but has a similar effect on breathing, the tissues that line the inside of the nasal passages can be over-sized. This also constricts the size of the airway, but it can be taken care of with nose surgery as well.
A broken nose often requires nose surgery to set the bone back into its proper place. Signs that the nose may be broken after being struck include bruising around the eyes and a nose that looks crooked or otherwise visibly deformed when compared to the way it looked before the impact.
People who have inflammation of the sinuses on a chronic basis can be treated with nose surgery. The doctor can use instruments to go through the nasal passages in order to access the sinus cavities.
