Reasons to Consider a Breast Reduction

March 21, 2016 by

breast reduction

Whether you watch an awards show or flip through a glossy magazine at the grocery store checkout, it may seem that enormous breasts are the best kind. Over a quarter of a million women received breast implants in 2012, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

However, bigger is not always better. There are plenty of reasons why a woman would choose to have a breast reduction. If you’re considering a reduction, understanding that you are not alone can make all the difference.

Pain and Discomfort

Large breasts can cause crippling back pain due to their weight. Large-breasted women may also experience pain in the shoulders or neck from the pulling of their bra.

Also, many women find physical activity to be uncomfortable. Even with a sports bra or two on, running, jumping or diving can cause the breast tissue to pull and flop around.

Harassment and Unwanted Attention

It can be incredibly uncomfortable to have a conversation with someone who is apparently only speaking to your breasts. Whether it’s getting cat-called on the train or a coworker’s lecherous leering, having so much attention focused on your breasts can be marginalizing and humiliating.

Trying to hide big breasts with loose clothes and layers can make a woman look frumpy or like she doesn’t care about her appearance.

When faced with these scenarios every day since puberty, it’s completely reasonable to consider a breast reduction.

Skin Concerns

Some women have such large breasts that they constantly suffer skin irritation or infections in the creases beneath them. Others develop sores from harsh underwire digging into their ribs or straps constantly tugging at their shoulders.

A breast reduction will often eliminate the need for such restrictive undergarments and allow the skin to heal permanently.

Self-Acceptance and Confidence

Some women feel their breasts make them look fat or top-heavy. Others lament that they can’t wear the fashions they like because sizes that accommodate their breasts aren’t offered. Some women are deeply uncomfortable with the sexualization of their breasts due to their size.

In all of these scenarios, a woman’s self-esteem and confidence could be undermined by how she perceives her body. By reducing the size of her breasts, she may then be able to accept her body and revel in the figure she always wanted.

Schedule Your Consultation Today

There are many reasons why a woman may consider seeking out a breast reduction surgery. If you’re experiencing any of the above scenarios and want to take steps to correct the issue, breast reduction may be right for you.

With locations in Celebration and Altamonte Springs, The Institute of Aesthetic Surgery is here to help you every step of the way in your journey. Contact our office today to schedule a consultation with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons.

We’ll be delighted to examine your case and discuss your possibilities with you.
